Going Beyond the Wheel Chair Ramp: Public Health Sudbury & Districts' Plan to Become Accessible to All

2018

This case study follows a standards specialist working to create programs and services at Public Health Sudbury and Districts (PHSD)—an organization which delivers provincially legislated public health programs and services in Canada—that are fully accessible and inclusive for people with disabilities, along with competent staff that recognize, understand, and apply attitudes and practices that are sensitive to and appropriate for people with disabilities. The case also examines ways in which organizations can engage their community and stakeholders while achieving targeted goals. This case would be suitable for use in classroom discussions about health equity, disabilities, universal design, surveillance, and social-ecological model of behavioral change.

The case contains guidance for instructors, including learning objectives and discussion questions. It is part of a 17-case collection written by students in the MPH class of the Schulich Interfaculty Program in Public Health at Western University, Canada. The cases may be freely copied and used for educational purposes by an accredited educational institution.
