Can Hospitals Do Health Promotion? Making Hospitals a Place for Both Care and Health Through Health Promotion

2018

This case study follows a young nurse with training in health promotion who finds her patients often going home to environments contributing to a continuous cycle of sickness. She believes in the ability of hospitals to use their unique positions to promote health interventions and to advocate for healthier communities using the “health promoting hospitals (HPH) approach”, which bridges the gap between acute care and health promotion in hospitals. The case seeks to find how hospitals can make social justice for healthier communities a reality, while also advocating to reorient healthcare resources. This case would be suitable for classroom discussions about organizational change, health promotion, acute care, and use of hospitals and networks in public health.

The case contains guidance for instructors, including learning objectives and discussion questions. It is part of a 17-case collection written by students in the MPH class of the Schulich Interfaculty Program in Public Health at Western University, Canada. The cases may be freely copied and used for educational purposes by an accredited educational institution.
