Lancet Commission 2019: Building a Tuberculosis-Free World

2019

This Lancet Commission report outlines country and global progress on addressing the tuberculosis (TB) epidemic, which killed 1.6 million people in 2017, representing more deaths than any other infectious disease. Progress in tackling this disease has proven difficult due to barriers in accessing high-quality services, inability to identify people with active disease in high-risk populations, underfunding of TB research and development, and insufficient political will and financial investments. To reduce the high prevalence of TB and meet the targets set out in the Sustainable Development Goals, the authors argue that Heads of Governments, national TB programs, and regional and site-level clinics, and non-governmental organizations will need to work synergistically to remove these obstacles. The authors make the case for increasing financial investments in diagnostics, treatment, research, and vaccines, in order to create TB-free world.
