GBD 2017: Measuring Population Ageing

2019

This article from The Lancet Public Health examines the ways in which health metrics are measured in terms of aging. According to the article, traditional metrics do not differentiate between a longer life expectancy and adding healthy years to life expectancy. By having a metric that includes both longevity and health status, it facilitates a more nuanced understanding of aging on a global scale. The authors hope that their findings could influence policymaking by identifying what motivates differences in aging burden and what resources are needed to tackle the burden worldwide.

Led by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington, GBD is a global effort with researchers from over 150 countries and territories. IHME and other partnering organizations have developed numerous resources to disseminate and visualize the findings of the GBD studies, data visualizations and interactives, country profiles, policy reports, research articles, infographics, and the GBD Results Tool, which allows users to search GBD data.
