Conflict Related Sexual Violence: Report of the United Nations Secretary-General

2019

This report, published by the United Nations (UN), presents over 70 country-specific anecdotes on sexual violence for 19 countries and explores its rippling effects, ranging from the fleeing of vulnerable populations to rising tensions between the government and violent rebel groups. The UN Secretary-General provides 38 recommendations for these conflict-ridden countries, with a focus on implementing action plans; prioritizing investigation and prosecution cases; increasing access to basic services; providing protection, reparations and holistic health and psychosocial services; and creating legislation that addresses conflict-related sexual violence and trafficking in accordance with international law. The report includes an annex which lists state and non-state actors suspected of committing or being responsible for rape or other forms of sexual violence in situations of armed conflict.
