Pain Management for People with Serious Illness in the Context of the Opioid Use Disorder Epidemic

2019

This report published by the National Academies Press (NAP) summarizes the proceedings of a workshop about pain treatment for patients with serious illness amidst the opioid epidemic. Speakers and presentations reviewed the nature of the opioid epidemic and the policies designed to combat it, showing how those responses affected people with serious illness. The workshop also addressed the special challenges for racial minorities, children, and those with both substance use disorder and serious illness. The workshop concluded with actionable recommendations drawn from the policy and regulations on pain management studied by the participants, including professional medical education, alternative drug development, and payment reforms.
