Global Education Monitoring Report: Deepening the Debate on Those Still Left Behind

2022

This report from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) analyzes progress toward gender parity in education. Using data from 120 countries, this report presents findings on the gender gaps in education access, attainment, and learning worldwide. The authors offer a global picture of the gender disparities in primary and secondary education across reading, math, and science achievement. The report finds that overall, girls have reversed or closed school enrollment and attendance gaps over the past 20 years. Still, gender disparities persist in various regions, such as Sub-Saharan Africa, and education exclusion still characterizes many countries worldwide.

This report accompanies the 2021/22 Global Education Monitoring Report, which assesses global progress toward the Sustainable Development Goal on education (SDG 4) and the role of non-state actors in education. The 2022 Gender Report thus analyzes how non-state actors impact gender inequality in and through education. The report presents findings on gender gaps in private institution enrollment and offers case studies on the role of non-governmental organizations in promoting–or hindering–gender equality worldwide.

The report is accompanied by a summary video and an online version of the report.
