Progress Report on HIV, Viral Hepatitis and Sexually Transmitted Infections, 2019

2019

This report published by the World Health Organization (WHO) assesses global progress on implementing global health sector strategies on HIV, viral hepatitis, and sexually transmitted infections. These diseases are responsible for 2.7 million deaths per year. For each strategy, the current burden of disease and key service metrics are compared to WHO’s 2020 targets. The report then examines different strategic directions that correspond to components of universal health coverage (UHC) and presents key data and actions to address the gaps. The report also analyzes progress in selected regions and countries. The report finds that current increases in many sexually transmitted infections, as well as slow decreases in HIV and viral hepatitis infections, hinder progress towards meeting the 2020 targets. The report sees promise for increased testing, prevention, and treatment through integrated responses and universal coverage. The report is accompanied by three appendices that lay out key data, accountability, and the state of HIV drug resistance.
