Law Enforcement Efforts to Fight the Opioid Crisis

2019

This summary report from the RAND Corporation focuses on developing the research agenda for law enforcement efforts to combat the opioid crisis. According to the report, on average, 130 people will die from an opioid related overdose per day – a statistic that has had a significant negative effect on the life expectancy rates for the U.S. Law enforcement officers at are the forefront of the response to the opioid epidemic, giving the officers in-depth knowledge of the current status of the epidemic. The event identified four high priority needs that needed to be implemented: the use of medication-assisted and other treatments in institutional and community corrections; same-day and low-barrier access to treatments; the use of surveillance to identify spikes in opioid use, overdoses, and new opioids on the market; and mental health interventions for law enforcement officers on the front lines of the opioid crisis.
