Transforming Mental Health Systems Globally: Principles and Policy Recommendations

2023

This article from the Lancet discusses methods for transforming mental health systems worldwide, as the world faces a growing mental health crisis. The article presents a series of principles and policy actions aimed at shifting current practices of mental health systems, specifically targeting the prevention of harmful social environments, increased diversity in the mental health care workforce, the introduction of a rights-based approach to prevent violence in care, and the prioritization of people's experiences within their care. The authors highlight the lack of wide-reaching and preventive care strategies for mental health and the need for a shift in society’s approach toward care and prevention; calling for policies which center quality care delivery, accountability, and care that is tailored specifically to the severity of mental health conditions.
