NCD Countdown 2030: Accelerating Progress in Low- and Middle-Income Countries

2022

This report from The Lancet presents a feasible package of 21 prevention strategies that can support low- and middle-income countries in achieving Sustainable Development Goal Target 3.4: To reduce premature mortality from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) by a third between 2015 and 2030. Implementing these cost-effective national strategies could reduce mortality for certain NCDs by a third or more. The package of interventions could be scaled or adapted to address each country's most pressing NCD causes.

Achieving this goal by 2030 would require US$140 billion in new spending over 2023–30; however, it would avert 39 million deaths over this period and generate $2.7 trillion in net economic benefits. Even with variation in NCD patterns across countries, policies that target tobacco smoking, alcohol use, and excess sodium intake would be relevant in nearly every country. The report culminates with analysis of what non-financial challenges need to be addressed to support success, such as healthcare workforce development and general health systems strengthening.
