A World Overheating

2021

This article from the Council on Foreign Relations examines extreme heat and how a rapidly warming planet threatens people's livelihoods worldwide. As one of the most significant impacts of climate change, extreme heat poses severe risks, especially to developing countries and low-income populations. The article discusses the effects of extreme heat on these populations, who are more vulnerable to heat-related illness and death, deforestation, food insecurity, and a lack of access to resources such as air conditioning. The authors also discuss the disproportionate impacts of severe heat on older populations, children, people with chronic conditions, and outdoor laborers, such as migrant farmworkers in the United States. Considering the severe impacts that climate change and extreme heat pose to the lives and livelihoods of people worldwide, the article calls for urgent action to adapt and mitigate extreme heat and address the worsening climate crisis.
