World Report on Vision

2019

This report from the World Health Organization (WHO) is the first global report assessing visual impairment worldwide. Of the 2.2 billion people with visual impairment, more than 1 billion people could have prevented or reduced their vision loss through proper intervention, such as the treatment of cataracts, preventing diabetes related blindness, or wearing glasses. Addressing The burden of visual impairment is not spread equally—those suffering most are women, people with disabilities, ethnic minorities, or are from rural or low-income backgrounds. The report suggests that the full continuum of eye services be combined into national health services, including at the primary care level, so that all populations to receive coordinated eye care across the life course. Such integration would contribute to achieving universal health coverage (UHC) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to health. The report is also accompanied by an executive summary.
