Closing the Gap in A Generation: Health Equity Through Action on the Social Determinants of Health

2008

This landmark commission report from the World Health Organization (WHO) summarizes how the social environments where people are born, live, grow, work, and age impact differences between and across countries. The authors indicate that health inequities—unfair and preventable causes of ill health—cannot be resolved by increasing national wealth alone; rather, it has to do with equitable distribution of benefits and solutions beyond the health sector. The Commission shares three recommendations to tackle these inequities: improve daily living conditions; tackle the distribution of power, money, and resources; and measure and understand the problems. The report is accompanied by an executive summary and regional reports.
