This report from the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) examines the utilization of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples to protect the rights of indigenous individuals around the world. This Declaration is a formal recognition of the rights of indigenous peoples' existence, heritage, culture, self-determination, and their rights as communities. This report seeks to examine how the Declaration has made a difference for indigenous individuals and communities, answering questions like: How has the Declaration been used? What gaps and challenges still exist that may be preventing the full implementation of the Declaration? Further, the publication puts forth recommendations to guide the way forward in fully achieving the rights outlined in the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
