World Trade Report 2019: The Future of the Services Trade

2019

This annual report from the World Trade Organization (WTO) examines the ways trade in services is evolving to become an important part of the global trade network. Services have grown to dominate national economies while also playing a larger role in the global economy – primarily due to changing technology. Services that once required in-person interaction can now be delivered digitally due to cheaper internet and vast telecommunication networks, meaning the services can be traded over long distances. The World Trade report emphasizes how these changes also impact the health sector as medical information and providers can be accessed anywhere in the world – as long as there is an internet connection available. The report also examines the ways in which education, agriculture, manufacturing, and many other sectors are impacted by the trade of digital services. The authors note that more coherent trade policies will be necessary, along with international regulatory cooperation, in order to address rapidly changing 21st century globalization.
