A Comprehensive Assessment of Universal Health Coverage in 111 Countries: A Retrospective Observational Study

2019

This article from The Lancet Global Health focuses on financial hardships experienced by families due to health care expenses and identifies how progress towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC) can mitigate this financial hardship. The goal of UHC is to not only provide everyone access to health services, but to also do so without undue financial strain on families and individuals. As countries move towards a universal coverage model, it is also important for decision-makers to track the financial strain health care expenses can have on families. This article measures progress towards UHC for 111 countries using an index based on eight service coverage indicators and one financial protection indicator. The financial protection indicator penalizes countries that have unequal access to services for those who are poor.
