Achieving Health Equity in Ontario: Increasing Capacity for Relationship Building with Indigenous Communities

2019

This case study from the Western Public Health Casebook 2019 focuses on the importance of fostering and creating meaningful relationships with the Indigenous communities in Canada, a mandate of the Ontario Public Health Standards’ Health Equity Standard. Paul Green, the Health Equity Manager at Turtle Creek Public Health (TCPH), is worried that his organization is not meeting the Health Equity Standard when his coworkers ask for direction in working with local Indigenous communities. This case follows Paul as he decides to conduct a situational assessment to explore how his organization can better build meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities.

This case contains guidance for instructors, including learning objectives and discussion questions. It is part of a 14-case collection written by students in the MPH class of the Schulich Interfaculty Program in Public Health at Western University, Canada. The cases may be freely copied and used for educational purposes by an accredited educational institution.
