Going Beyond the Virus: Understanding the Drivers of the Ebola Virus Outbreak

2020

This case from the Western Public Health Casebook 2020 focuses on global health governance challenges illuminated during an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The outbreak, which is far from contained, threatens to spill over into neighboring countries -- causing the World Health Organization to declare the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on July 17, 2019. Through the case, students examine the different actors involved in international health governance, as well as the role of regional sociocultural factors in fuelling the ongoing Ebola outbreak.

This case contains guidance for instructors, including learning objectives and discussion questions. It is part of a 16-case collection written by students in the MPH class of the Schulich Interfaculty Program in Public Health at Western University, Canada. The cases may be freely copied and used for educational purposes by an accredited educational institution.
