Development of an Electronic Health Record Strategy at the Glenburn Public Health Unit

2019

This case study from the Western Public Health Casebook 2019 focuses on the development of electronic health records for the Glenburn Public Health Unit (GPHU). Medical or electronic health records (EHR) are electronic databases that streamline an individual’s health records and care history throughout their life. These records are a single repository of patient information that can be shared among a variety of practitioners. The Glenburn Public Health Unit is conducting a review of their record keeping practices and notices that there are inconsistencies across the unit’s many health teams that may result in communication, logistical, and technical issues. The GPHU needs to develop a strategy to improve their record keeping practices with the ultimate goal of improving client services.

This case contains guidance for instructors, including learning objectives and discussion questions. It is part of a 14-case collection written by students in the MPH class of the Schulich Interfaculty Program in Public Health at Western University, Canada. The cases may be freely copied and used for educational purposes by an accredited educational institution.
