Active Schools: A Method to Combat Sedentary Behaviour?

This case from the Western Public Health Casebook introduces the Active Schools program into the Maple Leaf School District. Amelia Brooks, the Director of Education with Maple Leaf District School Board, recognizes the benefits and evidence surrounding the Active Schools program in both improving physical activity for students and in supporting inclusive physical activity. Amelia wants to use the program to combat the sedentary lifestyle among many students in her district and the program encourages students to undertake 60 minutes of physical activity on a daily basis. However, in order for her district to adopt the Active Schools program, Amelia needs to convince more than 50% of School Board Members – each of which have different agendas and priorities. This case follows Amelia’s proposal preparation.
