Lancet Commission 2020: A Future for the World's Children?

2020

This Lancet Commission is a joint publication with the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund that addresses the need for placing children at the center of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While many health indicators have improved for children globally, challenges such as climate change and conflict are threatening and will continue to affect children’s health everywhere. The Commission urges early investment in children’s health, education, and development that will benefit them, their future children, and society. Millions of children suffer from war, insecurity, and live in poverty or extreme hunger – these children are excluded from fundamental health rights and services, and the Commission report emphasizes that governments must collaborate across sectors to address children’s health in the future. Of special note, the report also emphasizes the need to regulate the particular dangers of commercial marketing, which can exploit young people’s developmental vulnerabilities in the short- and long-run. The Commission report is accompanied by an editorial and two comments about the urgency of this issue.
