World Water Development Report 2020 – Water and Climate Change

2020

This report, published by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on behalf of UN-Water, examines the ways in which climate change is affecting societies and water management in terms of adaptation and mitigation. Climate change is affecting the availability, quality and quantity of water for human needs, human rights to water and sanitation, and energy production. As climate change affects the water cycle, food security, human health, and economic development are also being impacted. The 2020 World Water Development Report assesses how these changes are affecting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The report—which is published annually—also focuses on how adaptation and mitigation can be used to improve the provision of water supply and sanitation services, therefore improving the causes and effects of climate change including disaster risk. It outlines specific areas to address the challenges of climate change including enabling people to adapt to the impacts of climate change, increasing resilience of livelihoods, and improving the efficiency of water use in agriculture. The report provides recommendations for proper oversight and coordination across sectors to address the interlinkages of the climate and water management. The report also highlights global financing, technological innovation, and opportunities for policy responses. The report is accompanied by an executive summary, main messages, a fact sheet, and a narrated video of the report.
