IDMC: Severity of Internal Displacement 2021
2021
This report from the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) assesses the range of severity of internal displacement conditions across 45 countries impacted by conflict and violence. At the end of 2020, the IDMC recorded 55 million internally displaced peoples (IDPs) worldwide, the highest number reported to date. Following a year marked by economic instability and crises spurred by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 report finds heightened levels of displacement severity around the world. This report provides a severity assessment of the living conditions of IDPs impacted by conflict across various contexts, using a scale from zero to two, with zero representing the least severe and two the most severe. The report provides a global and regional overview of internal displacement severity, mainly consisting of country profiles analyzing five dimensions: safety and security, livelihoods, housing, access to services, and the civic and social rights of IDPs.
Chapters include:
- Chapter 1: Introduction
- Chapter 2: Methodology
- Chapter 3: Data Availability
- Chapter 4: Global Overview
Given the range of experiences and needs across displacement settings, IDMC developed this methodology in 2019 to assess living conditions for displaced peoples, call attention to situations of concern, and highlight threats to the health, safety, and wellbeing of IDPs. The report intends to provide governments and humanitarian organizations with high-quality data to support response and preventions efforts related to displacement.
