Brief: The Impact of COVID-19 on Indigenous Peoples

2020

This policy brief from the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs examines the threat of COVID-19 to the health survival of indigenous peoples, many of whom are already the most vulnerable to poorer health outcomes. Indigenous peoples in nearly all countries have higher mortality rates, lower life expectancies, and greater rates of communicable and non-communicable disease compared to their non-indigenous counterparts. These outcomes are exacerbated by widespread stigma and discrimination in health care settings, poor quality care, and poor access to clean water and sanitation. The brief explores specific vulnerabilities of indigenous elders and women, and also outlines ways indigenous communities have already acted quickly to respond to COVID-19.
