Global Status Report on Preventing Violence Against Children 2020

2020

This report from the World Health Organization explores the progress made toward Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 16.2: to “end abuse, exploitation, trafficking and all forms of violence and torture of children.” According to the report, violence impacts the lives of more than 1 billion children, and it is estimated that half of children aged 2-17 experience some form of violence each year. Around one third of students aged 11 to 15 worldwide have experienced bullying by their peers in the past month and 120 million girls are estimated to have experienced some form of unwanted sexual contact before the age of 20. Children who are exposed to violence have an increased risk for mental illness, anxiety disorders, high risk behaviors – such as drug and alcohol abuse – and developing chronic diseases. The report examines if governments have national plans in place to prevent violence against children, are accurately measuring both fatal and non-fatal occurrences of violence, have identified and put in place specific goals to monitor progress, and are supporting the implementation of evidence-based interventions. While many countries have mechanisms in place to support violence prevention, few are fully funded and include measurable targets.
