Uncertain Pathways: How Gender Shapes the Experiences of Children on the Move

2021

This report from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) explores the role that gender plays for migrant and displaced children worldwide through each phase of the migration process, from the motivations influencing migration to the risks experienced in transit. With over 35 million children living outside their home country globally, including refugees, asylum seekers, and international migrants, the report seeks to examine how gender and childhood migration intersect. The report presents key findings on the varied experiences and difficulties that boys and girls face throughout the migration life cycle, examining several factors through a gender lens, including the drivers for leaving home, risks experienced on the move, and access to opportunities and services and educational outcomes. The number of migrant boys outnumbers girls by 1.2 million in 2020, the largest ever recorded difference for international child migrants. The report aims to consider how gender may expose different vulnerabilities to child migrants, impacting their decisions to move, risk of violence or discrimination, and success in navigating new environments. The presented data illustrate the complexity of migrant and displaced children’s lives and inform policies and programs to protect vulnerable girls and boys better worldwide.
