Primer: Benefits of Drawing to Learn

2023

What are the benefits of drawing, sketchnoting, and visual notetaking? For many students, taking pen to paper makes learning tangible and personal. Visualization, in particular, helps synthesize complex information or illuminate unexpected connections impossible by text alone.

To support educators interested in learning more, the Global Health Education and Learning Incubator at Harvard University (GHELI) has curated a few short, open access articles and blog posts that delve into “how” and “why” drawing and visual notetaking can be such powerful tools for learners. These resources can inform pedagogical practices in the classroom, hybrid, or online learning environments. Educators may wish to incorporate sketchnotes as a way to scaffold lessons and enhance assignments, while learners could leverage visual notetaking to support personal retention and synthesis of material.

The Global Health Education and Learning Incubator at Harvard University supports interdisciplinary education about world health through the production, curation, and dissemination of educational public goods.
