COVID-19 and Criminal Justice: City and State Spotlights

2021

This data interactive published by the Vera Institute of Justice describes the humanitarian and public health crisis occurring within jails and prisons in the United States throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. People in jails and prisons are unable to take measures to protect themselves from exposure to COVID-19, and many jails and prisons are experiencing a rapid spread of infection. The authors emphasize that people must be released from custody to prevent the situation from worsening. In this article, they provide information on some of the nation's jail systems in cities and states that are experiencing the worst effects of this crisis. They focus on Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, New Orleans, Kentucky, Michigan, and Tennessee. For each city or state, Vera provides interactive graphics on indicators such as reported COVID-19 cases and deaths, police-involved incidents, jail population, and other trends. Vera also includes guidance briefs and related resources suggesting changes each city or state can make to respond to COVID-19 within the criminal justice system.
