COVID-19 and the Need for Action on Mental Health

2020

This report from the United Nations outlines key actions countries can take to support good mental health during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Grief, isolation, loss of livelihood, overburdened health systems, and increased stressors are among the numerous reasons a long-term increase in mental health problems is likely. First describing the state of global mental health prior to the pandemic, the report walks through policy considerations for supporting the mental health of multiple vulnerable populations: first responders and frontline workers; older adults and people with pre-existing conditions; children and adolescents; women; and people in humanitarian and conflict settings. This report advocates for a whole-of-society approach to promote and protect mental health; widespread availability of emergency mental health and psychosocial support; and building mental health services for the future as a key dimension of COVID recovery.
