The Situation of Stillbirth Around the Globe

2023

This report published by the United Nations Inter-Agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (UN-IGME) provides a global overview of stillbirths globally, using the latest available data from 195 countries worldwide. The 2022 report follows up on the UN-IGME's first major stillbirth report in 2019, and presents data estimates for late gestation stillbirths, or deaths that occur at 28 weeks or more of gestation. In 2021, 1.9 million stillbirths occurred globally, and the report examines stillbirth rates and disparities across regions – and countries, finding that six countries account for nearly half of the estimated stillbirths in the world.

The authors present data on global progress toward stillbirth prevention, examine risks by region, country, and income group, and outline future goals and priorities toward increasing stillbirth awareness and ending preventable stillbirths worldwide. The report also includes case stories documenting personal experiences with stillbirths from parents and healthcare workers worldwide, underscoring the need for research, education, and quality care in pregnancy and childbirth.
