Water Under Fire, Volume 2

2020

This report from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) cluster of the World Health Organization focuses on global WASH needs, humanitarian crises, and the effects of COVID-19 on meeting WASH needs wherever and whenever they arise. The report is the second volume of Water Under Fire, following the first edition from 2019 that focused on the relationship between WASH and exposure to violence and conflict. Meeting WASH needs has become even more urgent during the COVID-19 pandemic, as access to basic sanitation services such as frequent handwashing with soap are essential to the COVID-19 response. This report makes a call to action for humanitarian organizations and WASH actors to place WASH needs at the core of survival and protection, prioritize preparedness, and invest in development financing. It outlines the steps of a five-year vision for the WASH sector to have the capacity to deliver and meet needs during emergencies at scale, at any time and in any place by 2025.
