Mental Health and Substance Use State Fact Sheets

2023

These U.S. state fact sheets from the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) examine national and state-level data on mental health before and during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The state fact sheets summarize information in eight categories: mental distress during the COVID-19 pandemic; mental illness prevalence; substance use and related deaths; suicide; mental health workforce; unmet need and barriers to care; private insurance; and Medicaid. The key findings based on the aggregate national-level data show that mental health symptoms have increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. 32.3 percent of adults in the U.S. reported symptoms of anxiety and/or depressive disorder in February 2023. Of great concern, 28.2 percent of adults with symptoms of mental illness in the past year did not receive mental health treatment. With many people having lost health care as a result of increased unemployment during the pandemic, targeted policy will be needed to address these growing concerns.
