Lancet Commission 2020: Diabetes

2020

This Lancet Commission highlights the work needed to close global gaps in diabetes prevention, care, professional knowledge, and data. Currently, the global community is not on track to meet the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Target to reduce noncommunicable diseases by 30 percent by 2030. In 2019, 463 million people had diabetes worldwide—80 percent from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). However, a data-driven, integrated strategy could reduce premature mortality from diabetes: The Commission’s modelling indicates that such a strategy could avert 800,000 premature deaths in the top 10 LMICs with the highest populations of people with diabetes. An integrated strategy necessitates linking population-based strategies for promoting health (e.g., tobacco control, food policies) with community-level health systems strengthening for early detection and intervention (e.g., universal health coverage, non-physician capacity building, technology use).
