People in Jail and Prison 2022

2023

This data publication published by the Vera Institute of Justice details the number of people incarcerated in state prisons, federal prisons, and county jails in the United States in 2022. Using data collected from local jails, state and federal agencies, and state prisons, the publication provides jail and prison population counts for 2022 by region and state. The report includes jail and prison statistics for each year since 2019, and incarceration rates and detention statistics. The report aims to provide timely data on how jail and prison populations have shifted nationally, including in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in reduced numbers of incarcerated people in the U.S. The report offers that while prison populations dropped from 2019 to mid-2020, by 2021, the country saw significant increases in jail numbers.
