Understanding the Relationship Between Child Marriage and Female Genital Mutilation

2021

This data publication from UNICEF aims to identify the connection between child marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM). Child marriage is more closely related to poverty, as poorer families may choose to marry off a daughter to reduce financial stress or to provide the daughter with a more secure financial future. FGM, on the other hand, is closely associated with cultural identity and a representation of shared values. In countries where both are common, girls at risk for child marriage and FGM have shared characteristics such as low levels of education, rural residence, and living in poorer households. However, the report highlights that many communities that practice one will not practice the other. The publication presents an overview of all countries and then goes into further depth for Burkina Faso, Chad, Ethiopia, Guinea, Kenya, Mali, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Yemen.
