Dashboard: Tracking COVID-19 in Immigration Detention

2022

This data interactive from the Vera Institute of Justice presents data about COVID-19 in U.S. immigration detention. The network of government and private facilities making up the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention system lack the adequate oversight and resources needed to protect detained people from COVID-19. The interactive highlights the limitations and irregularities of the data ICE chooses to release, which in turn underscore questions about ICE's enforcement and detention strategies and related ethics.

The interactive represents data that is archived and cleaned regularly, to track the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases among detained people nationally and per facility, currently and over time. In addition, users can visit the Vera GitHub page to download data sets and learn more about the methodology.
