State of the World's Indigenous Peoples, Volume V: Rights to Lands, Territories, and Resources

2021

This report from the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) examines the right to self-determination and rights to land, territories, and natural resources at the core of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The relationship indigenous peoples’ have to their lands and territories sits at the core of their cultural identities, as knowledge on the preservation of their environment is passed down from generation to generation.

The right of indigenous peoples to the determination of their lands was and continues to be a highly politicized issue. This report examines the wide range of perspectives on this issue, looking closely at national legislation and agreements related to indigenous lands. The publication analyzes successful practices and the continued challenges to the full realization of indigenous peoples’ rights to their land and territories. It also provides recommendations on ways to move forward.
