2021 Global Health Security Index

2021

This data portal from the Nuclear Threat Initiative, the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, and Economist Impact shares information assessing the global health security capacity of 195 countries that make up the States Parties to the International Health Regulations. The 2021 Index focuses on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on pandemic preparedness, with the report also addressing criticisms of the Index’s rankings in 2019. The authors note that while The Global Health Security (GHS) Index can identify preparedness resources and capacities available in a country, it cannot predict whether or how well a country will use them in a crisis.

The GHS Index assesses countries across six indicators: prevent, detect, respond, health, norms, and risk. Each country is assigned a score out of 100, which indicates its ability to respond to global health threats as they emerge. The overall Global Health Security score is 38.9 – indicating that international preparedness for epidemics and pandemics remains weak despite steps taken to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. The data portal includes a report, a data modelan introductory video, and an interactive map displaying the scores for each country.
