Ecosystem Restoration for People, Nature and Climate

2021

This report from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was released to declare the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030, an effort to prevent, halt, and reverse the degradation of ecosystems to benefit both people and nature. The report provides an overview of the state of the world's ecosystems, including farmlands, forests, freshwater, grasslands, shrublands and savannahs, mountains, oceans, peatlands, and urban areas. It examines the need for restoration by examining the impacts of degradation on the global economy, food security and clean water, health and well-being, climate change adaptation, biodiversity, and security. The authors emphasize that restoration requires sustainable green investments, stakeholder collaboration, and nature-based solutions.
