Cities and Pandemics: Towards a More Just, Green and Healthy Future

2021

This report from the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) assesses the situation of the world's cities a year after the coronavirus pandemic was declared. Because of travel, trade, and mobility, cities have been central in considering pandemic prevention and response. Much like previous public health crises, determinants like inequality, inadequate housing, lack of clean water and sanitation, and air pollution have exacerbated the impact of the pandemic on urban residents.

However, the past year has also illustrated that urban density alone doesn't determine virus transmission. Rather, it is the balance between density and adequate services. This is achievable for even the most populous cities with appropriate governance and resources. The report concludes by focusing on four priorities for cities: rethinking their form and function, addressing systemic poverty and inequality, rebuilding a new economy, and clarifying urban legislation and governance.
