The Abokobi Open Dump: Global Burden of Waste

2018

This case examines the waste management system in Accra, Ghana. Markedly, it studies the Abokobi open dump, a large open dump approximately one kilometer in diameter, which receives over 8,150 tons of waste per month. Considering the global burden of waste is already large and forecasted to increase, and uncollected waste is a significant public health hazard, this case emphasizes the need to discuss strategies and actions to reduce the amount of solid waste produced around the world. This case would be suitable for use in classroom discussions about recycling, waste management, solid waste, as well as incentives for communities and stakeholders to act on these topics.

The case contains guidance for instructors, including learning objectives and discussion questions. It is part of a 17-case collection written by students in the MPH class of the Schulich Interfaculty Program in Public Health at Western University, Canada. The cases may be freely copied and used for educational purposes by an accredited educational institution.
