Opioid Crisis in the Windsor-Essex Community: Time for Responsible Opioid Prescribing?

2020

This case from the Western Public Health Casebook 2020 focuses on Canada's ongoing opioid crisis, particularly in the Windsor-Essex region in Ontario. This includes a rise in deaths and overdoses related to prescription opioids or from increased availability of illegal forms of opioids, like fentanyl. Canadians are often overprescribed opioids for pain management, and this has been no different in Windsor-Essex County. To address the the ongoing crisis, a multipronged initiative was launched, focused on patient and healthcare provider education. The case includes data so that students can sift through and critically synthesize information on best practices for opioid prescribing, understand providers' knowledge gaps, and practice drafting their own plan for program implementation.

This case contains guidance for instructors, including learning objectives and discussion questions. It is part of a 16-case collection written by students in the MPH class of the Schulich Interfaculty Program in Public Health at Western University, Canada. The cases may be freely copied and used for educational purposes by an accredited educational institution.
