Recovery Through Education: An Integrative Approach to Mental Health for the People, by the People

2020

This case from the Western Public Health Casebook 2020 explores "recovery colleges," which focus on increasing community integration and improving wellbeing of people with mental health concerns. Originating in England in 2009, there's no general consensus about what constitutes a recovery college, beyond serving as a safe space for individuals with mental illness can lead their own journey of wellbeing. This case examines the importance of stakeholder and community engagement and collaboration in recovery colleges, and assess the positive and negative outcomes arising from such collaboration.

This case contains guidance for instructors, including learning objectives and discussion questions. It is part of a 16-case collection written by students in the MPH class of the Schulich Interfaculty Program in Public Health at Western University, Canada. The cases may be freely copied and used for educational purposes by an accredited educational institution.
