No Matter of Choice: Displacement in a Changing Climate

2021

This report from the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) explores the scale, patterns, drivers, and impacts of internal displacement associated with slow-onset climate change. Slow-onset climate change includes phenomena such as desertification, glacial retreat, loss of biodiversity, among others; when combined with socioeconomic and governance factors, it sets the stage for specific triggers of displacement like loss of land, livelihoods, and resources. The broader goal of this report is to inform policies and practices for managing and reducing displacement risk, particularly because many tested approaches already exist to effectively mitigate negative impacts.
