Combating Antimicrobial Resistance and Protecting the Miracle of Modern Medicine

2022

This report from the National Academies Press examines ways to address antimicrobial resistance in the U.S. and abroad. Nursing homes, dialysis centers, and long-term care hospitals are currently the largest hotbeds of pathogen emergence and spread. The authors emphasize a "One Health" approach that centers the interconnections of human, animal, and environmental health, offering integrated strategies for improving stewardship, increasing ecological surveillance, and preventing infections in humans and animals. The report also provides an overview of the current pipeline of antimicrobial drug development and approaches for bringing them to market. The report is accompanied by a fact sheet summarizing key recommendations.
