Lancet Commission 2022: Autism

2022

This Lancet report discusses the future of care and clinical research in autism, focusing on methods for improving the health and wellbeing of autistic individuals and families globally. With about 78 million people with autism worldwide, the Commission aims to outline the current landscape of autism and autism care, and explore how to best address the current needs of autistic individuals. While the past two decades have led to increased awareness and interest in understanding autism and other developmental conditions, improvements in care coordination and adequate support for autistic individuals and their families are still lacking. In this report, the Commission addresses gaps in care and outlines the need for coordinated, specific care across the lifespan for autistic individuals.

The Commission provides a series of recommendations to improve autism care, including increasing formal documentation and coordination of governmental healthcare, education, finance, and social care systems to address inequalities autistic people may face. The Commission also highlights the need for personalized health models and specific, direct interventions in order to tailor and increase the effectiveness of care for autistic people across the globe. The report is accompanied by commentary articles and related profiles.
