The State of the Global Education Crisis: A Path to Recovery

2021

This report, a joint publication by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), and the World Bank assesses the state of the global education crisis prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The report includes four major sections: the impact of COVID-19 on learning, growing in equality in education, policy responses for mitigating the effects of school closures, and creating more resilient educational systems. School closures affected more than 1.6 billion students across the globe, and remote learning opportunities varied significantly in quality and reach. In addition to experiencing disruptions in their learning due to school closures, children around the world also experienced higher risks to their health and safety. Domestic violence and child labor increased during the pandemic, students lost protection and psychosocial support from schools, and almost 400 million children missed out on school-provided meals, losing their reliable source of food and nutrition. The report urges countries to implement evidence-based strategies to adjust their teaching and curriculum to fit students' learning upon returning to school. It also emphasizes the need for measuring the efficacy of policy responses to mitigating learning loss and inequity. Countries must shift their focus to recovery to build resilient, equitable, and efficient education systems.
