Lancet Commission 2022: Intimate Partner Violence and Mental Health

2022

This Lancet Psychiatry Commission report focuses on intimate partner violence (IPV) and its relationship to the global burden of mental health harms. The report aims to assess progress toward reducing the prevalence of IPV―the most common form of violence worldwide- and associated mental health outcomes. The report also highlights ways to strengthen responses to IPV across mental health systems, research, and policy. The Commission finds that exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV)―in childhood or adulthood―increases the likelihood of developing mental health issues. Those who experience mental health issues also have a greater risk of exposure to IPV. The report discusses the relationship between IPV and mental health, examines the structural, individual, and relationship factors that influence intimate partner violence, explores IPV across the life course, and highlights the need to address IPV within mental health care outside of primary care services.

The report is organized into five parts:

  • Part 1: Introduction
  • Part 2: Evidence for Associations between IPV and Mental Health Problems
  • Part 3: IPV Across the Life Course
  • Part 4: Measurement of IPV
  • Part 5: Transformation of the Mental Health System to Address IPV
  • Part 6: Addressing Gender Inequality and Societal Responses to IPV

The Commission’s report is accompanied by an infographic, an editorial article on IPV and trauma, a commentary article on mental health care, and insight articles
