How Many Adults and Youth Identify as Transgender in the United States?

2022

This report from the Williams Institute provides updated population estimates for the number of youth and adults identifying as transgender nationally and in each of the 50 U.S. states. Using data from the CDC’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System and the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, the report provides population estimates on transgender youth and adults in the U.S. by gender identity, age, and race/ethnicity. The report finds that nearly 1 in 5 people who identify as transgender in the U.S. are youth aged 13 to 17 – comprising 18% of the transgender population, up from previous estimates of 10%. The report concludes that the overall percentage and number of adults identifying as transgender in the U.S. has remained steady over time.

The report includes figures for the number of transgender women, men, and gender nonconforming (GNC) adults in the U.S. and breaks down estimates by age groups from 13 to 65 years and older. Regional and state estimates for U.S. adults and youth who identify as transgender can be explored in data tables in the report, which include statistics across age and race/ethnicity.

The report is accompanied by a digital site, which includes an executive summary, a data interactive, and key data points from the report.
